Paper Mache Hand-Painting (Kashmir)
The art of Paper Mache, originally from the Middle East, was introduced to Kashmir in the 15th century. As one of the oldest handicrafts of the valley, its legacy has been meticulously passed down through generations, evolving into a hallmark of Kashmiri craftsmanship. The craft is renowned for its intricate designs that reflect the region's rich flora and fauna, featuring motifs such as flowers, chinar leaves and almonds, each holding a cultural significance. Originally painted on molded paper pulp, the art form has expanded to incorporate various materials, including fabric, stone, wood and metal. Despite its historical importance, Paper Mache is now a dying art in Kashmir, with only a few artisans preserving this heritage. We aim to honor this legacy by integrating the art into jewellery, thereby keeping this cherished art form alive in our contemporary lives.
